Healthy Kids Program - Funding for Dental, Hearing, and Optical Care

Provided by Government of British Columbia

Provides coverage for dental, optical and hearing assistance for children in low-income families.
The Healthy Kids Program provides coverage for basic dental treatment, optical care and hearing assistance to children (up to 19 yrs of age) in low-income families, who are not in receipt of income assistance, disability assistance or hardship assistance. What the BC Healthy Kids Program covers:
  • Dental: Children are eligible for $2,000 of basic dental services every two years. This includes services such as exams, x-rays, fillings, cleanings and extractions. Emergency dental treatment for the immediate relief of pain is also available if the child’s two-year limit has been reached. Orthodontics is not covered.
  • Optical: Children are eligible for prescription eyeglasses (lenses and basic frames) once in a 12 month period. All prescriptions must be current and meet the program criteria. Contact lenses are not covered.
  • Hearing: Coverage is provided for the least expensive, appropriate hearing instruments based on an assessment completed by either an audiologist or hearing instrument provider. Preauthorization must be obtained by the provider. Eligible hearing instruments include hearing aids, bone anchored hearing aids, cochlear implants, and repairs.

Children in families eligible for MSP supplementary benefits under Medical Services Plan (MSP) through the Ministry of Health are eligible for the Healthy Kids Program.

Before treatment begins, confirm that your dentist, optical provider or audiologist/hearing instrument provider offers services under the BC Healthy Kids Program. A list participating providers who is accepting children covered by the BC Healthy Kids Program is available here by selecting the 'Healthy Kids' filter.
